Dominique Jones hit a buzzer beater to help the Jilin Northeastern Tigers beat the Guangdong Southern Tigers 111-110, while the Beijing Ducks overcame the Qingdao Eagles 78-75 in the 2020-21 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) on Friday.
Zeng Fanri had a late chance to win it for Guangdong, but when Jones hit a phenomenal shot from 3-point range, Jilin capped a wild finish.
"It's a team win where we were playing on our heels," said Jilin coach Wang Han.
Jilin jumped early and held a 16-point lead in the third. With Marshon Brooks finding his way to score, Guangdong went on an 11-3 run to outscore 105-102. With just four seconds left, Jilin got the rebound and it was enough for Jones to throw in the crucial three-pointer.
"If we played tough on defensive end and get rebounds, we possibly would win the game, but we didn't do that," said Guangdong coach Du Feng.
Jones made a triple-double of 43 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists, while Brooks had 33 points for Guangdong.
Beijing got a revenge against Qingdao for its first-leg loss. Zhai Xiaochuan hit a baseline jumper and added a key free throw with 1.9 seconds remaining, sending Qingdao to its fifth consecutive loss.
Elsewhere, Sylven Landesberg's 50 points led the Zhejiang Golden Bulls to beat the Jiangsu Dragons 129-110.
The Beijing Royal Fighters will face the Shanghai Sharks on Saturday night, while the Sichuan Blue Whales will play the Tianjin Pioneers.
