Real Madrid's Norwegian international midfielder, Martin Odegaard has asked to leave the club on loan until the end of the season, according to widespread reports in the Spanish sporting press.

The 22-year-old made his request after being left out of the squad to face third tier side Alcoyano in the third round of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night where coach Zinedine Zidane is expected to give a chance to fringe players.

Odegaard returned to Madrid at the start of the season after the club cut short his two-season loan with Real Sociedad after just one year. During that year he played over 2,500 minutes of league football helping the side from San Sebastian qualify for Europe, as well as reaching the final of the Copa del Rey and was considered one of the best players in La Liga.

He was expected to play an important role for Real Madrid on his return to the club, but has so far made just nine appearances totaling less than 400 minutes and he has played less than 10 minutes in the past six weeks.

There is speculation that Real Sociedad could be interested in taking him back, although Madrid might prefer to see him play abroad and then look to sell him while his transfer value remains relatively high.
