The Wukesong Ice Sports Center, the ice hockey training venue for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, passed inspection for its ice-making capabilities on Jan. 25, as determined by the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee. This makes it the first Beijing 2022 ice rink venue to have operational conditions with carbon dioxide trans-critical direct cooling ice-making technology.
Don Moffatt, the chief ice maker for all Beijing 2022 ice hockey venues, assessed the quality of the venue's rink's ice on Monday. Moffatt spoke highly of the ice-making works, adding that he believes that athletes will enjoy their training sessions on these bright and well-made ice rinks.
As the largest passive ultra-low energy consumption sports venue, the Wukesong Ice Hockey Training Hall adopts a carbon dioxide trans-critical direct cooling technology to make its ice, saving more than 40% comprehensive energy consumption compared to other more traditional means. The cooling technology also ensures that every part of the ice's surface is consistent, providing better quality ice overall.
To conduct a comprehensive test on the carbon dioxide ice-making unit, the venue produced thin ice from Dec. 28, 2020, to Jan. 8, 2021. The actual ice-making lasted from Jan. 15 to 20.
Located at the southeast corner of the Wukesong Culture and Sports Center, the training venue covers approximately 38,960 square meters, and its two basement floors are home to the ice rinks. The venue is directly next to Wukesong Gymnasium, the ice hockey competition venue for Beijing 2022.
