The National Indoor Stadium completes its renovation for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games on Monday after two years of effort, equipping the 2008 summer Olympics venue with two ice hockey rinks.

Among the seven venues in need of renovation for the games, the National Indoor Stadium was the second to be completed, following the National Aquatics Center.

The rinks will be used for formal competitions and warm-up trainings for the games, and can switch between the size of 60 meters by 26 meters for ice hockey events and the size of 60 meters by 30 meters for figure skating, short track speed skating, and daily trainings.

The ice-making system, refrigeration units, and cooling methods are all energy saving and environmentally friendly, said Qi Liang, an official from the venue's operations team, adding that the ice fields can be turned into summer sports venues.

Apart from the rinks and service facilities for ice hockey in the main hall, the renovation also included converting the auxiliary hall into a dressing area during the games, and building a new ice hockey training hall north of the stadium.

The renovated venue now covers approximately 98,000 square meters. Consistent with the original establishments in construction style, the curtain walls of the new training hall is made of 863 pieces of glass with ice flower patterns. It can efficiently bring in natural lighting that can be adjusted through a special shading design.

After the games, the new establishment will be used for trainings, competitions for junior groups, and experience activities of ice hockey, Qi said.
