Manchester United whitewashed Southamption 9-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night to go level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

The game was as good as over by half-time when United led 4-0 and Southampton had been reduced to 10 men in the second minute with Alexandre Jankewitz's direct red card.

Southampton had already been hit badly by injuries and were missing nine first-team players from the starting lineup.

United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka opened the scoring from close range after 18 minutes and Marcus Rashford doubled the lead on 25 minutes after good work from Luke Shaw.

Jan Bednarek deflected into his own net to make it 3-0 before Edinson Cavani headed home a Shaw cross in the 39th minute to add a fourth.

Anyone thinking United would ease off in the second half was mistaken, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men kept hammering in the goals. Anthony Martial scored their fifth in the 69th minute and Scott McTominay made it 6-0 two minutes later.

Bruno Fernandes' penalty in the 87th minute (which also saw Bednarek sent off) saw United net their seventh of the game, before late goals from Martial and James rounded off an incredible night for United and a disaster for Southampton just over a year since they lost to Leicester City by the same score.

Arsenal's recovery ground to a halt with a 2-1 defeat away to Wolves which Mikel Arteta's side ended with just nine men on the pitch after David Luiz and Bernd Leno were both sent off.

Arsenal took the lead through Nicolas Pepe just after the half-hour, but Wolves drew level from the penalty spot thanks to Ruben Neves after Luiz was shown a red card for his challenge on Willian Jose.

Joao Moutinho's stunning strike two minutes into the second half gave Wolves the lead, and any chances Arsenal had of an equalizer were ended in the 72th minute when Leno was sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty area.

Newcastle United's brief recovery after winning away to Everton at the weekend came to a rapid half as they lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace, who fought back from Jonjo Shelvey's early goal with first-half strikes from Jairo Riedewald and Gary Cahill. The bad news for the visitors was a hamstring injury suffered by Wilfried Zaha.

Sheffield United claimed their third win in five games as they came back from a goal down to beat West Brom 2-1 in a match between the league's two bottom sides.

Matt Phillips put West Brom ahead from close range after 41 minutes but Jayden Bogle drew Sheffield United level in the 56th minute and Billy Sharp smashed home a loose ball with 17 minutes left.
