Athletic Club Bilbao coach Marcelino Garcia Toral ruled himself out of being a candidate to replace Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.

Although former player Ryan Mason has been appointed as a short-term replacement for Mourinho, Marcelino was named as a potential long-term substitute for the Portuguese coach, who was surprisingly sacked on Monday. British press on Wednesday morning said Tottenham had been in contact with his representatives.

Marcelino only joined Athletic Club at the start of 2021 and has been with them less than four months. Although he led them to victory in this season's Supercup, they were beaten in two Copa del Rey finals within two weeks, losing 4-0 to FC Barcelona on Saturday.

When asked about the possible Tottenham link after his side returned to action with a 0-0 draw away to Betis on Wednesday night, the man who has also coached Valencia, Villarreal, Sevilla, Zaragoza and Racing Santander replied he had "nothing to say about Tottenham."

"I am happy at Athletic because of the way the fans and everyone at the club has welcomed me. We are a bit sad about not winning either of the cup finals, but we had very happy moments, when we beat Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Supercup and now we are going to continue working to improve Athletic."

"That is my idea and the one I am absolutely focused on," said the 55-year-old, who has a contract until June 2022.
