Wu Lei scored twice as China cruised to a 7-0 win over Guam in Suzhou on Sunday to move into sole possession of second place in Group A of the second round of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

The Spain-based striker put the Chinese on their way to collecting all three points in front of a crowd of 29,222 at Suzhou Olympic Sports Center as Li Tie's side closed the gap on leaders Syria to five points with three games remaining.

The Chinese next face the Maldives on June 3 while Guam, who have yet to claim a point in the second round of qualifying, take on the Philippines.

Guam held out until the 17th minute when Marlon Evans upended Wu Lei in the penalty area, and the Espanyol winger picked himself up to stroke his spot-kick confidently past goalkeeper Dallas Jaye.

The Chinese continued to pour forward, but were initially wasteful with their finishing. Wu Lei headed just wide five minutes after scoring while Ai Kesen also saw his header go off target. Wu Xi, meanwhile, looped his shot over the bar.

With six minutes remaining in the half, however, Wu Xi turned provider as Li Tie's side claimed a second. The former Jiangsu Suning midfielder slid a perfect pass into the path of Jin Jingdao and he slotted home his first-time effort.

Wu Lei added China's third 10 minutes into the second half when he reacted quickest as Zhang Xizhe cut his free-kick on the right towards the penalty spot, leaving the former Shanghai SIPG man to sweep his shot into the corner of Jaye's goal.

China's fourth came when Wu Xi stroked home from close range after Wang Shenchao's delightful cross curled towards goal from the left, dissecting the space between the defence and Jaye to leave Wu Xi with a simple finish.

Ai Kesen powered his downward header past Jaye to claim China's fifth goal in the 66th minute following a curling cross from the right by Tang Miao and A Lan used his thigh to steer Zhang Yuning's cut back over the line six minutes from time to score his side's sixth.

The Brazil-born forward was on target again two minutes from time when he nodded in Wei Shihao's cross to complete a comfortable night for Li Tie and his team.
