Olympic champions Lyu Xiaojun and Shi Zhiyong will be leading China's weightlifting squad at next month's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The eight-member team includes four male and four female lifters. It is a mixture of experience and youth, with the 37-year-old Lyu being the oldest and 21-year-old Li Wenwen the youngest, said the Chinese Weightlifting Association.

All the eight lifters named in the Tokyo-bound squad have claimed title victories at the Asian Championships in Uzbekistan in April, which was viewed as an important reference for the selection.

"The selection is based on the principles of fairness, impartiality and openness. The roster was decided after a comprehensive set of factors had been taken into consideration, such as the athletes' training level, competition results, major event experience, psychological conditions and injuries, as well as those of our major opponents in the world," read an announcement from the Chinese national weightlifting team.

"Due to the quota limits of the Olympic weightlifting events, which only grant slots to eight participants from each member association at max, it's a regret that some outstanding athletes have not been selected," it added.

Deng Wei, the Olympic gold medalist in Rio 2016 and reigning world record holder of women's 64kg, has been left out after being sidelined by a waist injury. Tian Tao, the men's 96kg world record holder in the clean and jerk, also failed to win selection.

Squad:

Men's team: Li Fabin (61kg), Chen Lijun (67kg), Shi Zhiyong (73kg), Lyu Xiaojun (81kg);

Women's team: Hou Zhihui (49kg), Liao Qiuyun (55kg), Wang Zhouyu (87kg), Li Wenwen (over 87kg).
