FC Barcelona on Tuesday confirmed that French international midfielder, Ousmane Dembele will need an operation after suffering a tendon injury while on duty with France in the European Championships.

Dembele suffered a "biceps tendon injury in his right knee" after coming on as a substitute in France's 1-1 draw against Hungary, and the French national team confirmed on Monday that he would have to abandon the squad.

Although Barcelona have not said how long they expect the winger to be out of action, French sports paper, L'Equipe estimates that he could need up to four months to recover, meaning he won't play again until the start of November.

It will be the third time that Dembele has needed an operation while at Barcelona and the 11th different injury he has suffered since joining from Borussia Dortmund. The first of those saw him sidelined for nine months after suffering a serious muscle injury while playing in Getafe in 2017.

His second operation came in November 2019 after tearing a tendon in his femoral biceps while playing against his former club and that also left Dembele out of action for nine months.

He enjoyed his best season since joining Barcelona in the recently finished campaign after seeming to leave his long succession of injuries behind him.

The new injury comes at a bad time for both player and club, who had been negotiating a new contract to extend his current deal due to expire at the end of June 2022.
