Doncic, Slovenia too much for Japan, wins 116-81

Luka Doncic shone again with 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in 26 minutes as Slovenia toppled Japan 116-81 in the Olympic men's basketball competition on Thursday.


Zoran Dragic scored 24 points for Slovenia, which improved to 2-0 in Group C play. Vlatko Cancar added 16. Rui Hachimura led Japan with 34 points, Watanabe added 17.


"We did it with a good approach, with good effort and we showed that in the first and also in the second game. We have to continue in this way," Jaka Blazic of Slovenia said after the game.


Japan, which lost 88-77 to Spain on Monday, only managed to trail 29-23 in the first quarter but never closed the gap after that. "They played better than us," Japan's coach Julio Lamas said.


Both the men and women's teams of Spain won on Thursday. The Spanish girls defeated Serbia 85-70. Alba Torrens grabbed 25 points. Cristina Ouvina added 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Spain. Jelena Brooks led Serbia with 16 points, followed by 15 points from Yvonne Anderson.


As for the men, Spain, the defending world champions, beat Argentina 81-71 in a rematch of 2019 Basketball World Cup final. Ricky Rubio scored 26 points for Spain and Sergio Llull added 10. Nicolas Laprovittola scored 27 points for Argentina, followd by 13 from Luis Scola.


In another women's competition, Canada got its first win at Tokyo 2020 by beating South Korea 74-53.


Canada, who lost to Serbia in first group match, led 33-28 at the break before they took control the game with a 8-0 run and never looked back.


"We really keyed in on our defensive pressure going into the second half and I think that really helped us with the victory," said Shay Colley.


Bridget Carleton scored 18 points for Canadians. Natalie Achonwa finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Alexander added 10 points.


JiSu Park had 15 points and 11 rebounds for South Korea. Leeseul Kang and Danbi Kim contributed 11 apiece.
