The Chinese women's rugby sevens team made history by finishing seventh after beating the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) 22-10 on Saturday at the Tokyo Olympics.

It's the first time that China qualified for Olympic rugby tournament.

The ROC led China 10-7 in the first half before China stormed back with three tries in a row by Yang Min, Xu Xiaoyan and Chen Keyi in the second.

"We haven't played international games for a long time due to COVID-19, but everybody shows pure heart every game. We stick together and fulfill our goal today," China's coach Lu Zhuan said.

As the top scorer for China, Chen Keyi had 27 points in six games, placing eighth in the player scoring list.

"Although we have lost to Australia and the U.S., we know we are improving, getting stronger and more confident throughout the game," Chen said.

As the rugby sevens women's competition concluded on Saturday, New Zealand defeated France 26-12 to claim the gold medal. The bronze went to Fiji.
