Basketball: USA gets tough quarterfinal draw vs. Spain

The stage is set for the Olympic men's basketball quarterfinals on Sunday.

The United States will encounter Spain, and Australia squares off against Argentina. Slovenia will play against Germany, while Italy will contend with France for a semifinal spot.

Slovenia edged Spain 95-87 on Sunday in the final game of men's group play. Luka Doncic finished with 12 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists for Slovenia. Vlatko Cancar grabbed 22 points. Mike Tobey added 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Spain moved closer 88-87 before Klemen Prepelic made two free throws to help Slovenia lead 90-87 with 13 seconds left. Ricky Rubio of Spain missed a 3-pointer before Slovenia closed it out.

Rubio scored a team-high 18 points. Alberto Abalde added 14.

"Our defensive transition was not good enough when we had the lead. Our rebounding was not good enough when we had the lead," said Spain's center Marc Gasol about his side's loss.

Luis Scola scored 23 points as Argentina defeated host nation Japan 97-77 in a must-win game to book a final eight berth.

"We like to play without pressure, so we have to think about a good pressure, not a bad pressure. We enjoyed this game tonight. We just played together, we put our life in every ball, and I think we changed that bad pressure in a good way," Argentina's Facundo Campazzo, who had 17 points and 11 assists, said after the game.

Gabriel Deck scored 16 points and Marcos Delia finished with 14. Yudai Baba led Japan with 18 points. Yuta Watanabe notched 17. Rui Hachimura and Makoto Hiejima scored 13 apiece.

In the women's competition, Spain shrugged off Canada 76-66. Astou Ndour scored 20 points for Spain. Cristina Ouvina contributed 15 points and Alba Torrens added 12. Kia Nurse led Canada with 14 points, followed by 11 from Natalie Achonwa.

Elsewhere, Serbia edged South Korea 65-61. Aleksandra Crvendakic had a team-high 15 points for Serbia. Tina Krajisnik added 14. Park Ji-hyun led South Korea with 17 points.
