RB Leipzig have signed versatile midfielder Ilaix Moriba from Spanish giants FC Barcelona, the Red Bulls announced on Tuesday.

Moriba signed a five-year contract with Leipzig and replaces Marcel Sabitzer, who has joined rivals Bayern Munich.

"With Ilaix Moriba we were able to sign an absolutely exceptional talent. We are very proud that, despite many offers from European top clubs, he opted for RB Leipzig. We would like to thank FC Barcelona for the good and fair talks," RB Leipzig commercial director Florian Scholz said.

Moriba made his first-team debut for Barcelona on January 11 against Cornella in the Spanish Cup. He scored one goal and laid on three assists in 18 competitive encounters.

"I am very delighted that my transfer to RB Leipzig worked out. Leipzig always play offensively and therefore fit my style of play. I am convinced that Leipzig is the ideal next step in my career and further development. That was ultimately the reason for my transfer," said Moriba.

Tenth-placed Leipzig have made a disappointing start to the new Bundesliga season and face a clash with title holders Bayern Munich on September 11.
