Fabio Cannavaro has parted ways with Chinese Super League giant Guangzhou FC, Chinese media reported on Thursday.

The former Italy captain, who originally planned to fly back to Guangzhou on Thursday, has canceled the journey after agreeing to terminate his contract with the Guangzhou club on mutual consent, a report by Chinese news portal sohu.com said.

The Guangzhou FC so far made no comment on the report.

The Guangzhou FC captain Zheng Zhi will serve as the interim coach to help the eight-time Chinese top-flight champions see out this season, according to the report.

The Guangzhou FC insisted they will finish this season as scheduled, although their mother company China Evergrande Group is being mired in financial difficulties, the report said.
