The National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, finished renovations on Thursday, marking that completion of all construction works of Winter Olympic venues and supporting infrastructure in Beijing and Yanqing competition zones. The National Stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Over 1,671 days, Beijing has completed the construction and renovation of eight competition venues, 16 non-competition venues, and 31 supporting facilities in Beijing and Yanqing competition zones, which are two of the three zones of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The competition venues have been taken over by the organizing committee for the Beijing Winter Olympics, and the supporting facilities have been put into use, according to Ding Jianming, deputy director of Beijing Major Projects Construction Headquarters Office.

As the only city in the world to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics, Beijing has made full use of its 2008 Summer Olympic venues, in addition to the newly built National Speed Skating Oval and the Big Air Shougang. As for non-competition venues, Beijing will also take advantage of its public service infrastructure for the upcoming event.

Hailed as the most beautiful competition zone, the Yanqing competition zone has built two world-class venues, the National Alpine Skiing Center and National Sliding Center, both firsts of their kinds in China.

The Beijing Winter Olympics infrastructure and venues construction project has also taken advantage of innovations in technology, low-carbon energy use, and architecture. The 2022 Olympics will become the first to fully use green sources of electricity such as photovoltaic power and wind power. Beijing will also be the first host city to use an ice-making technology with nearly zero emission of carbon dioxide on a large scale.

The two competition zones in Beijing have begun the construction of temporary infrastructure for spectators, athlete services, TV broadcasting, epidemic prevention and control, and logistics. The work will be finished at the end of the year.

The renovations of the National Stadium mainly focused on accessible facilities, lighting, and spectator system, so that the venue will be more humanized and sustainable, according to Xiang Jun, general manager of National Stadium Co., Ltd. For example, the venue added more accessible bathrooms and children-friendly devices. Hot water will also be available in the spectators stand.
