A number of new technologies and innovative services will be used at the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics, the city said at a news conference on Thursday.

After the Chinese capital won the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, the Ministry of Science and Technology drew up the action plan to hold a "high-tech Winter Games." The Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee made plans to provide technological support in a number of areas, including infrastructure construction, environmental conservation, smart services, broadcasting technologies, and AI, according to Yu Hong, director of the Beijing 2022 organizing committee's technology department.

A number of tech innovations were utilized during the construction of venues. For example, the construction of the National Speed Skating Oval, known as the "Ice Ribbon," was based on a saddle-shaped cable-net structure to reduce the use of steel by a quarter compared with the traditional way of roof construction. The National Aquatics Center is equipped with improved installation technique and monitoring systems, so that it can switch from a swimming pool to an ice rink in only 20 days. And technologies such as the Internet of Things and AI are helping to build the National Stadium into a digitally-driven, low carbon. and smart venue.

All venues will receive 5G coverage, including the roads connecting the venues, to provide network connectivity for ultra-high-definition livestreaming and smart services. The 5G base stations for the 2022 Winter Olympics can withstand extreme weather conditions, such as extremely cold temperatures and strong winds.

An enhanced meteorological forecasting system will provide accurate and reliable prediction of weather, which are important to ensuring the operations of the sport events and athlete performances.

To honor its promise of holding a carbon-neutral event, Beijing 2022 has chosen to use carbon dioxide as a refrigerant at some competition venues, including the newly built National Speed Skating Oval. The new technology has helped to maintain the consistency of the ice within a range of 0.5 degrees Celsius, and achieved close to net-zero carbon emissions.

A total of 80 hydrogen vehicles were tested in Zhangjiakou. And during the Winter Games, over 700 hydrogen buses will be deployed in Yanqing and Zhangjiakou to provide transportation services. The 2022 Olympic torch is also fueled by hydrogen.

To cater to the growing audience appetite for a more interactive Games experience, Beijing 2022 organizers and venue operators have tested new broadcasting technologies, such as 8K ultrahigh definition livestreaming and cloud-based broadcasting.

In addition, intelligent services and innovative products, such as remote simultaneous interpretation services and an automated speech recognition and translation system, will be available at the 2022 Winter Games.
