FC Barcelona will be without utility player Sergi Roberto for around four months after it was confirmed on Wednesday that he will have an operation to treat a hamstring injury.

The operation will be carried out by Dr Lasse Lempainen in Finland in the coming days to cure a problem that has dragged on since the player, who can operate at full back or in midfield, had to go off injured during Barca's defeat to Rayo Vallecano on October 27.

The 29-year-old was originally pronounced fit to return against Espanyol on November 20, but two days later the club informed he had "problems in his right quadricep," and he has not reappeared.

He joins an injury list which currently includes striker Martin Braithwaite and Kun Aguero, who is out of action for at least two more months while investigations are continuing into a possible heart complaint.

Roberto is out of contract with Barca at the end of June and talks are still ongoing over a new contract.
