Freiburg recaptured fourth and returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga after upsetting Borussia Monchengladbach with six first-half goals in the closing of the 14th round on Sunday.
The "Foals" caught the worst possible start on home soil as Freiburg needed two minutes to mark the opener as Kevin Schade's square pass found Maximilian Eggestein, who tapped home into the bottom left corner.
Freiburg then clinically made it two with five minutes gone when Christian Gunter's cross into the area allowed Schade to head home at the far post.
Borussia couldn't gain a foothold into the clash as Freiburg scored with every chance they get, as Philipp Lienhart benefitted on a Yann Sommer's parry before poking home from very close range in the 12th minute.
Freiburg continued relentlessly and showed no mercy as Nicolas Hofler nodded home Vincenzo Grifo's corner kick to make it 4-0 with only 19 minutes played.
Monchengladbach couldn't put up resistance and had to swallow the fifth goal as Lucas Holer slotted home a rebound from close range.
The hosts eventually got their first opportunity on target in the 34th minute when Denis Zakaria unleashed an effort into the arms of Freiburg custodian Mark Flekken.
Freiburg cut a better figure in front of the goal as Nico Schlotterbeck headed home Grifo's free-kick, extending the lead to six goals in the 37th minute.
The "Breisgauer" took the wind out of Monchengladbach's sails and retracted with the six-goal lead in the second half whereas the hosts failed to do any damage for the remainder of the game.
"I am speechless. We staged a poor defense and had to swallow four set-piece goals. The game was over after the 4-0 deficit. There is not a lot I can say to be honest," Monchengladbach midfielder Jonas Hofmann said.
"Absolute surreal performance by my team. After the early opener we gained momentum and left Monchengladbach no room to gain a foothold into the game. We staged a faultless performance," Freiburg defender Nico Schlotterbeck said.
With the highest win in the club history, Freiburg move to fourth and recover from a two-game losing streak. Meanwhile, Borussia Monchengladbach suffered its second straight loss to slump to the 13th place.
Elsewhere, Stevan Jovetic's brace helped Hertha Berlin to clinch a two-all draw after a two-goal deficit against Stuttgart. With the result, Hertha stay 14th while Stuttgart remain in 15th place.
