Manchester City remain at the top of the Premier League on a weekend when the top-three sides all won but made hard work of their rivals.
Manchester City had over 20 shots against Wolves, who were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of halftime when Raul Jimenez was sent off after seeing two yellow cards in just 30 seconds.
However, the only goal of the game came midway through the second half when Raheem Sterling netted the 100th Premier League goal of his career from the penalty spot after Joao Moutinho's handball.
Liverpool also had to work hard as former hero Steven Gerrard took his Aston Villa side to Anfield.

Mohamed Salah's 67th minute penalty was all that separated the two teams and was enough to frustrate a dogged defensive display from Villa, that was marred by Tyrone Mings' foul on the Egyptian.
There were three penalties in Chelsea's dramatic 3-2 win at home to Leeds United, who were minutes away from a point when the referee decided Mateusz Kilch had fouled Antonio Rudiger to allow Jorginho to score the winning goal from the penalty spot.
Raphinha had put Leeds ahead from the spot, only for Mason Mount to draw Chelsea level three minutes before halftime.
Raphinha fouled Rudiger in the 58th minute to allow Jorginho to score his first penalty of the game, but it looked as if 19-year-old Joe Gelhardt he had taken a point when he drew Leeds level shortly after coming on as a substitute in the 83rd minute.
West Ham dropped two vital points in a 0-0 draw away to Burnley in a game littered with full-blooded challenges in which defenses came out on top.
David Moyes's side were slightly better than Burnley, but the home team claimed a point after some solid work by keeper Nick Pope.
Any hopes Newcastle may have held of taking advantage of Leicester's midweek exit from the Europa League and building on last weekend's first victory of the season at home to Burnley were swiftly ended by a 4-0 defeat at The King Power Stadium.
Youri Tielemans opened the scoring in the 38th minute from the penalty spot after James Maddison had been brought down. The impressive Belgian netted a second after the break with Patson Daka and Maddison also netting against a rival that has to face Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in their next three games
Cristiano Ronaldo's 75th minute penalty after he had been fouled gave Ralf Rangnick another win as Manchester United coach as his side sneaked past Norwich City 1-0 with an unconvincing display which saw David de Gea make several important saves.
Arsenal had a much easier afternoon as they won 3-0 win at home to Southampton with first half goals from Alexander Lacazette and Martin Odegaard and a second half header from central defender Gabriel.
Crystal Palace returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win at home to Everton thanks partly to two more goals from the impressive Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher, whose second goal was outstanding. James Tomkins also netted for Palace, while Salomon Rondon scored a consolation for Everton.
