The National Aquatics Center launched an exhibition Dec. 11 that looks back at the efforts of its donors to jointly fund the venue before the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and their preparations for the upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Games.

From 2003 to 2008, some 350,000 compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan as well as overseas Chinese from 107 countries and regions donated a total of 940 million yuan to build the National Aquatics Center.

Also known as the “Water Cube,” the iconic venue of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games once hosted swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming events. Now, however, it has been converted into the “Ice Cube,” and is set to serve as a curling venue, making it the world’s first Winter Olympic Venue to create curling ice in a swimming pool.

A proposal was also unveiled during the launch ceremony highlighting the support of compatriots and overseas Chinese for the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
