In round two, former Wimbledon champion and Spanish world No. 3 Garbine Muguruza was eliminated after losing in straight sets to French world No. 61 Alize Cornet.

The French underdog managed to beat the Spanish 2020 Australian Open finalist without dropping a single service game, the final score was 6-3, 6-3.

Cornet broke Muguruza's composure early, after taking a 3-0 lead in the opening set. A high number of unforced errors left Muguruza unable to seal any breakpoints.

Cornet especially shone in her aggression from the baseline, winning nearly 60 percent of her baseline points to Muguruza's 39 percent.

The unexpected loss of No. 3 seed has left a gap in the women's favorites for this year's title.

It will be 31-year-old Cornet's first time to make it to the third round of the Australian Open since 2018.

"I think I played a good match out there today and my state of mind was perfect," said Cornet after her victory.

"Hopefully my experience can help me in the next round even though I have no idea who I will be playing."

Now, Cornet will have to prepare herself for her round three match, against either world No. 29 Slovenian Tamara Zidansek or British player Heather Watson.

In another Thursday morning upset in the women's bracket, No. 6 seed Anett Kontaveit was knocked out by 19-year-old, up-and-comer, Clara Tauson from Denmark. Tauson beat the Estonian 6-2, 6-4.
