A total of 686 student volunteers are ready to welcome athletes and officials to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Villages when they officially open Jan. 27.

Zhou Zongyuan, deputy head of the volunteer operation team for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Village, said that most of the college volunteers are from seven universities in Beijing. Among them, more than 60% are from Beijing University of Technology (BJUT).

Zhou said that since last October, the BJUT volunteers have been working in the village and familiarizing themselves with the premises. Their voluntary services will cover 27 areas such as reception, accommodation, catering and commercial services.

Most of the volunteers will start their services without any formal, on-site training. "At the beginning, I met some problems that were not covered in the online training. Thanks to the timely guidance from our teachers, everyone quickly adapted to deal with emergencies calmly," said Zhou Ming, a 2020 undergraduate majoring in international trade at BJUT.

Volunteer Liu Qi who works in the delegation reception center said that they are becoming more experienced and skillful as international delegations and athletes arrive.

Given that most of the volunteers are college students, and some of them will stay in the closed-loop for nearly three months, their own care is equally as important as the care and services they'll be providing. In response to problems that may result from long-term isolation, BJUT is making psychological counselors available for the volunteers and has already prepared a psychological care plan to protect the volunteers' mental health.
