Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen is training with the second team of Ajax this week to work on his fitness until he finds a new club, the Amsterdam-based soccer club announced on Tuesday.

On June 12, 2021, the 29-year-old midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest during the European Championship match between Denmark and Finland. The Dane got to wear an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and was given the green light by his doctors in December to resume his football career after completing months of individual recovery.

Eriksen had to cancel his contract with Internazionale as professional athletes are not allowed to play with an ICD in Italy, the only country in the world with such a rule. At the moment his eyes are on a return in the English Premier League. Eriksen joined Ajax as a youth player and played in the first team from 2010 to 2013. After that he joined Tottenham Hotspur and in 2020 he moved to Inter.

"I am very happy to be here," Eriksen told on the website of Ajax. "At Ajax I know the people, it feels like coming home because I was here for so long. All facilities are available here and I can train at a high level in a group. That's the perfect foundation for me at the moment. I want to be at my best again as soon as possible so that when I find a new club, I can perform well there as quickly as possible."
