World record holder Nils van der Poel took gold in the men's 5,000m speed skating competition at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Swede clocked a winning time of six minutes and 08.84 seconds to lower the Olympic record set by Dutchman Sven Kramer.

Patrick Roest of the Netherlands, who qualified first in the discipline at the Dutch trials, took the silver medal with 6:09.31. Hallgeir Engebraaten of Norway finished third in 6:09.88.

Kramer failed to add another Olympic medal to his tally of nine, as the 35-year-old finished the 5,000m in 6:17.04, after previously winning the distance at a record three consecutive Winter Olympic Games
