The organization and management of sports competitions at the ongoing Beijing 2022 are progressing smoothly and the fields of the venues were praised by athletes and international sports federations, said Beijing 2022 Vice-President Yang Shuan yesterday at a regular Beijing Winter Olympics press conference.

According to Yang, some new medal events were added to Beijing 2022. These events were jointly proposed by the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) and the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (BOCOG) before receiving final approval from The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The BOCOG adhered to the general principles of the IOC in hosting the Games and worked to attract more young people to Beijing 2022. It also pledged to increase the participation rate of women, which reached 45% at Beijing 2022, the highest in Winter Olympics history. In order to deliver a great Winter Olympics, the BOCOG had studied and communicated every technical detail to the GAISF. As many as 1,879 domestic technical managers participated in related technical work for the Winter Olympics.

When answering a reporter's question about the competition schedule, Yang said that the operation of the Games was generally very smooth and was lauded by the GAISF. He mentioned that the BOCOG had cooperated closely with venue teams and made it possible for the seamless transition of the ice surface at the Capital Indoor Stadium.

The competition rink at the Capital Indoor Stadium was designed for both short-track speed skating and figure skating. As ice surfaces for the two events have different temperature and thickness requirements, the venue needs to finish the conversion in a short time.

When asked about his expectations for Chinese athletes at the Games, Yang said that he hoped all athletes, including Chinese athletes, achieve good scores.

"As Chinese, we hope Chinese athletes achieve excellent results in this Winter Olympics, but if you ask me how many gold medals they are going to win and the target, I believe there is no target. We hope they win gold medals abiding by the law and reflect the sportsmanship," Yang said.
