Former Porto boss Vitor Pereira said Saturday he was swayed to join Corinthians by the strength of their squad and the passion of their fans.

The 53-year-old arrived at Sao Paulo's Guarulhos international airport on Saturday, three days after accepting a deal that runs until the end of the year.

He was greeted in the arrivals hall by dozens of Corinthians fans chanting his name and a posse of waiting reporters.

"I know many players in the squad and I decided to come here because they have quality," Pereira said. "I believe in what this club is trying to achieve. I'm now going to start working as hard as I can to better understand what we have."

Pereira replaces former Barcelona left-back Sylvinho, who was dismissed on Wednesday after a poor run of results.

He said he was not surprised by the enthusiastic reception afforded to him by Corinthians fans.

"It's one of the reasons I came here," said Pereira, whose managerial career has also includes spells in charge of Olympiacos, Fenerbahce and Shanghai SIPG, among other clubs.

"There are millions of people that are deeply passionate about this football club, a great club in a very competitive league."

He is set to make his debut in the Corinthians dugout in an away clash against Sao Paulo next Saturday (March 5).
