French Open finalist Casper Rudd was knocked out of the Cinch Championships held at the Queen's Club in London as the world No.5 lost to British wild card Ryan Peniston in straight sets on Tuesday.

Rudd, 23, reached a Grand Slam final for the first time at Roland Garros earlier this month, only losing to legend Rafael Nadal as the Spaniard finally clinched his 14th French Open title and 22nd Grand Slam trophy.

The Norwegian top seed met his first opponent Ryan Peniston at the Queen's Club on Tuesday, losing 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) to the resilient British wild card.

"I can't really believe it. It feels like a dream," said the world No. 180 Peniston after claiming victory in his first ATP Tour main draw match. "I didn't get much sleep last night thinking about this match and it doesn't feel real."

Defending champion Matteo Berrettini of Italy breezily past the opening round by beating home player Daniel Evans 6-3, 6-3.

Despite missing the whole clay season due to injury, the world No. 10 Berrettini returned to the court in form to win the Stuttgart Open last week.

Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka also reached the last 16 after seeing off American Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (2), 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5).
