Former Argentina striker Carlos Tevez has been appointed manager of Rosario Central, less than eight months after ending his playing career.

The 38-year-old replaces Leandro Somoza, who quit last week after a poor run of results.

"Carlos Tevez is the new head coach of Rosario Central ... after signing a 12-month contract," the Argentine Primera Division club said on social media.

Tevez announced his retirement last November after a career that included spells at Boca Juniors, Corinthians, West Ham, Manchester United, Manchester City, Juventus and Shanghai Shenhua. He was capped 76 times for Argentina's national team and scored 13 goals.

Rosario Central are currently 22nd in the 28-team Primera Division standings, with four points from as many matches.

Tevez will be in the team's dugout for the first time on Friday, when Rosario Central host Gimnasia in the Primera Division.
