French Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain announced former Nice manager Christophe Galtier as their new head coach on Tuesday, replacing Argentina's Mauricio Pochettino who was sacked earlier in the day.

"I am delighted to join Paris Saint-Germain," Galtier said. "I am fully aware of the responsibilities involved in coaching this extraordinary team, which is one of the most competitive and spectacular squads in Europe."

"I am prepared. If I accepted this job and this responsibility, it's because I'm capable of it," the Marseille-born coach added.

55-year-old Galtier led Lille to the Ligue 1 title in 2020-21, before joining Nice last season, where he took the southern team to fifth place in Ligue 1 and the French Cup final.

Galtier also led Saint-Etienne to the 2013 French League Cup title, which was the Greens' first trophy in 32 years.

"Christophe's track record is outstanding, and he has enjoyed success at every club he has managed," PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi told the club's official website.

Pochettino took charge of PSG in January 2021, replacing Thomas Tuchel. The Argentinian had one year still to run on his contract and becomes the fourth straight coach to be fired by PSG.

"Paris Saint-Germain confirms it has ended its collaboration with Mauricio Pochettino," the club said in a statement. "The club wishes to thank Mauricio Pochettino and his staff for their work and wish them the best for the future."

Although the former Tottenham manager won a record-equaling tenth Ligue 1 title with PSG last season, the team suffered a humiliating Champions League exit to Real Madrid in the round of 16, in addition to a surprising defeat on penalties to Galtier's Nice in the French Cup.

Galtier spent most of his playing career in France before playing one season in China with Liaoning in 1998, after which he retired from playing.
