Seven positive COVID-19 cases have occurred among Japan's marathon team at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22, organizers said on Saturday.

The cluster represents two athletes, four supporting staff of the endurance events, and the head coach of the team, a joint statement from the World Athletics, the LOC and the Japan Association of Athletics Federations said.

"In line with the COVID-19 protocols in place for the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 and in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Guidelines, those who have tested positive have already been isolated and will remain in isolation for five days," read the statement.

"Steps are being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 both within the Japanese delegation as well as amongst all the teams present for the Championships," the statement said.

"All athletes have been fully vaccinated as a requirement for participation in these Championships."
