Chelsea's England international right back, Reece James has signed a new contract to keep him at Stamford Bridge until the end of June 2028, the club confirmed on Monday.

The 22-year-old, who made his first team debut in 2019 and has since won 13 England caps, had been linked with possible interest from Real Madrid, who had viewed him as a possible long-term candidate to replace Dani Carvajal and had hoped to tempt him away on a free transfer if he didn't sign a new deal.

However, the defender preferred to stay at Chelsea, who he has supported since he was a child.

"I grew up supporting this club and I've been here since I was a six years old. I put pen to paper on a new deal because this is the club I want to be at. I'd like to say a special thanks to the fans, I am here to stay and we have a bright future ahead of us."

"I am over the moon with my new contract and I'm thankful for the fans, the new ownership and everyone involved in the club. I cannot wait to see what the future holds, and I am sure we will have the chance of winning many trophies," he said on the club website.

Meanwhile, Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly said James was "an outstanding player and a true Chelsea man, and we are all looking forward to watching him continue to flourish at Stamford Bridge."
