AC Milan sank to their first defeat of the Serie A season on Sunday, losing 2-1 to Napoli at San Siro, while Monza celebrated their first Serie A victory with a shock 1-0 win over Juventus.

The clash between Milan and Napoli was a head-to-head for top spot, as the two sides were locked together with only goal difference separating them. Milan's ace player Rafael Leao was suspended, so Rade Krunic stepped in at left wing.

The home side had a more aggressive start as Olivier Giroud's attempt was fingertipped onto the woodwork, while Krunic's header was denied by Alex Meret.

The Rossoneri found themselves on the back foot in the 54th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia won a penalty and Matteo Politano put Napoli ahead by converting the spot-kick.

Milan got back on level terms in the 68th minute when Theo Hernandez broke into the box, pulling back for Giroud to hit in a first-time strike.

Napoli restored their lead 10 minutes later when Mario Rui whipped in a cross and Giovanni Simeone's twisting header helped Napoli kill the game.

The win sees the Partenopei move onto 17 points, followed by Atalanta who edged Roma 1-0 thanks to starlet Giorgio Scalvini's sole goal.

Also on Sunday, struggling Juventus provided another below-par performance, as newly-promoted Monza, who had only one point before Sunday's game, registered their first win in the top flight.

Juve traveled to Monza without the suspended Juan Cuadrado and Arkadiusz Milik, with coach Massimiliano Allegri forced to sit high in the stands.

The Bianconeri were toothless and were reduced to 10 men before half-time, as Angel Di Maria jutted out an elbow onto Armando Izzo's chest.

The decisive moment came in the 73rd minute, when Christian Gytkjaer came off the bench to slide the ball into the net.

The win saw Monza move off the bottom of the table, while Juve rank eighth with only two wins.

Elsewhere, Nicolo Barella's stunning free-kick in the opening minutes gave Inter Milan an early lead, but Milan Skriniar's own goal, added to Jaka Bijol and Tolgay Arslan's headers, saw Udinese complete a 3-1 comeback win.

In Sunday's other fixtures, Lazio enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 victory over Cremonese, while Fiorentina conquered Hellas Verona 2-0.
