China's rising star Zheng Qinwen advanced into the second round of the San Diego Open on Tuesday, after Garbine Muguruza was forced to retire from 5-0 down in the first set.
"I was lucky to get into the draw and I had a good match today. To get into the next round, it's double lucky," said Zheng, who lost to Camila Osorio 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) in the final round of qualifying but made the main draw as the lucky loser.
Zheng will face world No.1 Iga Swiatek in the second round on Thursday. They have met each other at the French Open earlier this year when Zheng was defeated by Swiatek in the round of 16.
"Iga is a player who's trying to improve herself. I respect that a lot. Staying focused and playing my own way would be the key, and I'm sure she will do the same thing. I'm really looking forward to playing with her, and I'll try my best," 20-year-old Zheng added.
