First-half goals from Daichi Kamada and Randel Kolo Muani helped Eintracht Frankfurt beat Marseille 2-1 in the fifth round of UEFA Champions League Group D on Wednesday.

The Eagles made a fairy-tale start at home as they broke the deadlock with only three minutes played when Evan Ndicka's cutback pass found Kamada, who tapped home at the far post.

Marseille responded well and came close in the 11th minute after Jonathan Clauss pulled wide from 16 meters.

The hosts posed more danger as Mario Gotze headed narrowly wide from a promising position in the 15th minute, before Jesper Lindstrom couldn't beat Marseille goalkeeper Pau Lopez Sabata from close range four minutes later.

The visitors eventually punished Frankfurt's wastefulness with 22 minutes gone as Matteo Guendouzi volleyed home Chancel Mbemba's pinpoint cross into the box.

Frankfurt restored their lead five minutes later after Gotze and Kolo Muana exchanged passes before the Frenchman slotted home from seven meters.

Marseille almost equalized with their next attack, but Hrvoje Smolcic's last-second clearance denied them.

The visitors increased the pressure in the closing stages as Frankfurt custodian Kevin Trapp had to be on guard to save an Amine Harit volley on target.

After the restart, Marseille dominated possession but couldn't turn their dominance into a tangible reward, as Alexis Sanchez chipped over the target from a good position at the hour mark.

Igor Tudor's men pressed for the share of spoils, but Frankfurt's defence stood firm to secure a vital win in Group D.

"It was a tough clash. Marseille pressed hard and put us under pressure, but we fought back to secure a win on home soil. We had some chances and should have killed the game off earlier," said Frankfurt midfielder Gotze.
