Argentina midfielder Rodrigo de Paul is in danger of missing his team's World Cup quarterfinal against the Netherlands because of a leg injury.

The 28-year-old Atletico Madrid player trained separately from his teammates on Wednesday after aggravating a right hamstring strain in the 2-1 win over Australia in the round of 16.

His absence could pave the way for the return of Leandro Paredes or Guido Rodriguez to Argentina's starting lineup at Lusail Stadium on Friday.

In better news for Argentina, winger Angel di Maria is expected to be available against the Dutch after recovering from a quadriceps problem.

The last meeting between the Netherlands and Argentina was in the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup when the South American team prevailed 4-2 on penalties to reach the final against Germany.
