Chinese Ning claims men's 1500m silver at speed skating World Cup

Ning Zhongyan of China won the silver medal in the men's 1,500 meters in the speed skating World Cup in Calgary on Friday.

Ning clocked one minute and 42.957 seconds, only 0.027 seconds behind Wesly Dijs of the Netherlands, for his third podium finish of this season. He had collected a gold in the men's 1,000m in Heerenveen and a bronze in the men's 1,500m in Stavanger.

Dijs snatched his career-first World Cup title with his compatriots Kjeld Nuis and Patrick Roest finishing third and fourth respectively.

South Korean Kim Min-sun won her third consecutive gold in the women's 500m this season. Following victories in Stavanger and Heerenveen, the 23-year-old continued her dominance in this event as she crossed the line in a personal best time of 36.972 seconds.

Vanessa Herzog of Austria came in second with 37.261 with Jutta Leerdam of the Netherlands taking home the bronze with 37.356.

Ragne Wiklund of Norway grabbed her second title this season, clocking 3:56.937 to win the women's 3,000m race ahead of Dutch skaters Marijke Groenewoud and Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong while the men's team pursuit gold medal went to the United States.
