Mikaela Shiffrin is only one win shy of the women's record for most World Cup victories, as the American won her 81st World Cup title in a Zagreb slalom race in one minute and 31.42 seconds on Wednesday.
This was also the fifth consecutive win for Shiffrin as she finished ahead of Slovakia's Petra Vlhova, who was 0.76 seconds behind, and Sweden's Anna Swenn Larsson, 1:21 seconds slower than Shiffrin.
Shiffrin, 27, led in the first run and extended her advantage with an almost flawless second run to seal victory.
The women's world record is currently held by Shiffrin's compatriot Lindsey Vonn, who won 82 World Cups. Shiffrin could equal Vonn's record on Thursday as another slalom event will be held in Zagreb.
Shiffrin is a four-time overall World Cup champion and a four-time slalom world champion. She won gold in the slalom at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and the giant slalom at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.
She had been favorite to win multiple medals at Beijing 2022 but she failed to finish three races and won no medals in the six events she competed in.
