AC Milan fumbled a two-goal lead and settled for a 2-2 draw against Roma on Sunday, while Napoli ensured their place at the top of Serie A at the season's halfway point after winning 2-0 away to Sampdoria.

An injury crisis took its toll on the Rossoneri as they entered San Siro without Mike Maignan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ante Rebic, Rade Krunic, Divock Origi, Junior Messias, Alessandro Florenzi and Simon Kjaer.

The home side had a more aggressive start and broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when Sandro Tonali's corner set up Pierre Kalulu's header.

Milan kept their pressure and doubled the lead in the 77th minute when Rafael Leao's dribble drew out defenders before his smart pass found substitute Tommaso Pobega to drill home.

However, the Giallorossi silenced San Siro in a matter of seven minutes. They pulled one goal back through their first attempt on target in the 87th minute with Roger Ibanez's header, followed by Tammy Abraham's equalizer after Nemanja Matic's shot was blocked.

Milan dropped to third following the frustrating stalemate, level with Juventus on 37 points while Juve rank second thanks to a superior goal difference.

Elsewhere, Napoli bounced back from their defeat to Inter Milan by conquering Sampdoria, as goals from Victor Osimhen and Eljif Elmas saw the Partenopei sail away.

With two rounds to the season's halfway point, Napoli secured their status as winter champions with a comfortable seven-point advantage over Juve and Milan.

Also on Sunday, Lazio drew with Empoli 2-2, Salernitana shared the spoils with Torino 1-1, and Spezia and Lecce played out a goalless draw.
