Liverpool are set to be without Spanish international midfielder Thiago Alcantara for around a month, who suffered a hip injury.

Thiago will miss Liverpool's vital Champions League clash with Real Madrid as well as Premier League matches against Everton, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Manchester United.

The 31-year-old suffered the injury while training ahead of Monday's Liverpool derby against Everton.

Liverpool are already without Vigil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Roberto Firmino along with Arthur Melo, who isn't included in their Champions League squad.

There are hopes that Van Dijk, Jota and Firmino could be fit to face Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League tie on February 21, but the trio will still struggle to reach the intensity needed to play against the reigning European champions.

Liverpool are tenth in the Premier League and have a lot of work to do to qualify for Europe next season, meanwhile they have also been knocked out of the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, and the Champions League is their only hope of silverware this season - although given their current form and injury situation, that looks unlikely.

Coach Jurgen Klopp said on Friday that despite the club's worst season under his tenure that he was "100 percent committed" to staying at Anfield.

"These are the difficult times and I don't enjoy it, but if you can show in this time that especially this club is so special because we believe in anything. If people believe in me, then we can go through this together because when we come out, we will have great times again," he said.
