Chengdu targets a 'world-famous city of sport event'

Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province, known as the home of giant pandas, is striving to build itself into a world-famous city of sporting events.

The city has hosted the World Police and Fire Games in 2019, the Chengdu 2022 World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals and the Chengdu FISU Games in 2023.

It was recently announced that the 12th edition of the World Games will be held in Chengdu, from Aug 7 to 17 in 2025, with around 5,000 athletes from around the world competing in 35 sporting events, said the organizers.

IWGA President José Perurena said that Chengdu, having successfully hosted the 31st FISU World University Games this summer, has a solid foundation to host the World Games. He said that he and his colleagues have inspected several planned sporting venues, with the quality of these venues bring highly satisfactory.

Perurena made the remarks on the sideline of the First Competition Managers Meeting of the TWG 2025 Chengdu held from Oct 24 to 25. During the meeting, representatives from various entities including the General Administration of Sport of China, IWGA, the Chengdu municipal government, international sports federations, international broadcasters, as well as the organizing committee and domestic sports associations involved in the preparations for the 2025 World Games, engaged in fruitful exchanges and discussions.

The 2025 World Games is expected to attract some 5,000 athletes from around the world to compete in 35 sports events. Some of the venues that have previously hosted events and training sessions for the Chengdu FISU Games will also host competitions for the 12th edition of the World Games, according to the organizing committee.

The preliminary rounds for certain individual events of the 2025 World Games are set to begin on Oct 31, and all preliminary rounds will conclude by March 2025.
