Nottingham Forest on Tuesday confirmed that they have sacked coach Steve Cooper after a run of results that has left them close to the Premier League relegation zone.

The popular Cooper joined Forest in September 2021 from Swansea City and led the club back to the Premier League for the first time in 20 years in his first season in charge, before keeping them up after initially struggling to adapt last season.

However, a run of six defeats in eight games, including a 5-0 loss to Fulham and a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, has left the club 17th place in the league, just five points above the bottom three.

"Steve Cooper has today been relieved of his duties as head coach of Nottingham Forest, following a spell of over two years in charge," read a club statement.

"The club will make a further announcement on the appointment of a new head coach in due course."

Cooper appears likely to be replaced by former Valencia, Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Espirito Santo. The Portuguese has been out of work since being dismissed by Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad early in November, not long after leading them to the Saudi Pro League title.

Although Nuno's last experience in the Premier League was a short and disappointing spell at Tottenham, he had previously led Wolves back to the top flight and guided them into European competition for the first time since the 1980-1981 season.
