A Stefan Savic own goal during the second period of extra time ensured Real Madrid's progression to the final of the Spanish Super Cup, following a captivating 5-3 win over Atletico Madrid in Riyadh on Wednesday night.

Savic's ill-fated attempt to clear Joselu's missed connection with Dani Carvajal's cross resulted in the ball unexpectedly bouncing over Atletico keeper Jan Oblak and into the net, determining the outcome of a match that saw both teams have significant opportunities to win.

With Atletico desperately advancing everyone forward for a last-minute corner, Real Madrid's substitute Brahim Diaz clinched the win on a counter-attack, exploiting Oblak's advanced position.

The game ignited early, with Atletico winger Samuel Lino drawing a spectacular save from Kepa Arrizabalaga within the first six minutes with a curling shot, orchestrated by Rodrigo de Paul and Antoine Griezmann.

Despite Kepa's efforts, Mario Hermoso soon put Atletico ahead, heading in unchallenged from the subsequent corner.

Facing a largely supportive crowd, Real Madrid mounted a strong response, exerting pressure on Atletico. While Alvaro Morata threatened to extend Atletico's lead, Real Madrid flipped the script. Antonio Rudiger's commanding header, following a corner kick, marked the start of their comeback.

Real Madrid's ascendancy continued with Ferland Mendy nudging them ahead in the 29th minute, cleverly diverting Carvajal's low pass into the net.

Real Madrid's lead, however, was short-lived, as Griezmann crafted a moment of excellence, turning the Real defense inside out and placing a precise right-foot shot past Kepa.

Oblak's heroics came into play when he thwarted Rodrygo's attempt in the area, preserving the tie.

The second half unfolded with more tactical play. Lino's attempt for Atletico went just wide, while Oblak made key saves against Carvajal and Rodrygo. The match's tension escalated in the 78th minute when Atletico controversially regained the lead, capitalizing on a chaotic moment involving Kepa, Morata, and Rudiger.

Approaching the final whistle, Atletico seemed destined for victory. However, a lapse in concentration by Jose Gimenez in the 85th minute allowed Vinicius Jr to challenge him, leading to a series of blocked shots before Carvajal struck the ball into the net, sending the match into extra time.
