China's Wang Xinyu, 30th seed in the 2024 Australian Open, was beaten 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 by France's Diane Parry in her opening match at Melbourne Park on Sunday.

The third-highest-ranked Chinese woman in the singles draw at the tournament, Wang got off to a slow start in the match, falling behind 2-0 in the opening set before coming back to level the score.

Trailing 3-4, Wang suffered a serve broken again, and Parry capitalized on her opportunity by serving out the first set in 52 minutes.

Wang responded by breaking serve three consecutive times en route to leveling the match by winning the second set in 43 minutes.

Missed chances to seize the advantage early in the third set proved costly for Wang, with Parry surging to victory in two hours and 21 minutes for her first win in the main draw at the Australian Open.

Overall, Parry converted 43 percent of her break point chances for the match compared to Wang's 38 percent.

The Chinese player, the world No. 34 who made the second round at the Australian Open in 2022 and 2023, put more first serves in play than her 70th-ranked opponent but won only 62 percent of her first points while Parry won 69 percent of hers.

Parry will play Kamilla Rakhimova from Russia in the second round.
