Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino says his side needs "patience" as they fight to save their season.

The Chelsea coach spoke to the press ahead of Wednesday's FA Cup replay away to Aston Villa, which follows hot on the heels to last week's 4-1 league defeat away to Liverpool and a 4-2 humiliation at home to Wolverhampton at the weekend.

Chelsea was booed off the pitch at Stamford Bridge after the Wolves defeat left them 11th in the Premier League, and questions are now starting to be asked about the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain coach.

The club has spent over a billion euros in the last four transfer windows - more than any other in the world, but Pochettino insisted that "the expectation is different from the reality, it's difficult to get what you deserve."

"We have a very good group of players, but for different reasons, as we have explained from the beginning of the season, we are not performing in the way that the people expect," he told the press.

"For different reasons we are just not performing on the pitch. The most important thing in football is to trust, and we need to find the trust amongst the coaching staff and players, because they need to perform on the pitch," said Pochettino, who also believes the criticism that his side has received will not help.

"That is affecting the players, because this team needs confidence. We need the support and our fans need to be behind Chelsea. The people need to realize that situation. We cannot send any different messages."

Pochettino has now been in charge of the club for 31 games, the same as his predecessor, Graham Potter, but he insisted that with so many changes in the squad, "it takes time to build a team. That is the reality, the fans need to be patient."

"We are trying to fix all the things as soon as possible, we are going to perform and be in the position that the club deserves," concluded Pochettino.
