Two-time grand slam winner Carlos Alcaraz said Wednesday that he expects to be fit for the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells next month after suffering an ankle sprain at the Rio Open.

The 20-year-old was forced to retire hurt just two games into his opening match against Thiago Monteiro at the Jockey Club Brasileiro on Tuesday night.

"I just had an MRI on my ankle after yesterday's injury," the world No. 2 said in a social media post.

"The diagnosis is a grade II lateral sprain ... that will keep me out for a few days! See you in Las Vegas and Indian Wells!"

The BNP Paribas Open, an ATP Masters 1000 event, will be played on the hard courts of Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California from March 6 to 17.

Alcaraz is scheduled to meet fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in an exhibition match in Las Vegas on March 3.
