Former Brazil national team manager Fernando Diniz has signed a 12-month contract extension with Fluminense, the Rio de Janeiro club said on Wednesday.

Diniz, whose existing agreement had been due to expire in December, will now be tied to the reigning Copa Libertadores champions until the end of 2025.

"Today, we had the pleasure of renewing Fernando's contract, which is part of our long-term vision for stability and longevity of work," Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt told a news conference.

"We had been talking for a long time, planning for this, because we are very satisfied with the work that he has been doing."

Diniz, a former midfielder who played for Fluminense in the early 2000s, took charge of the club for a second time in April 2022, having also held the position in 2019.

His combined record over the two spells is 90 wins, 40 draws and 52 losses. The 50-year-old guided Fluminense to their first ever Copa Libertadores title last November when the Brazilian Serie A outfit overcame Boca Juniors 2-1 in the final.

Diniz was sacked as manager of Brazil in January after a turbulent six-month period in which he filled the role alongside his job at Fluminense.
