Tiquinho Soares scored a second-half winner as Botafogo moved three points clear at the top of Brazil's Serie A standings on Wednesday with a 1-0 home victory over reigning champions Palmeiras.
Soares sent a first-time effort into the bottom-left corner after Luiz Henrique's cross from the right side of the penalty box.
The result at Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Stadium leaves Botafogo with 36 points from 17 outings, while second-placed Palmeiras have 33 points.
Elsewhere, former Paris Saint Germain and Tottenham Hotspur attacker Lucas Moura struck early as Sao Paulo edged Gremio 1-0.
Sao Paulo are now fourth in the 20-team standings, six points behind Botafogo, while Gremio are 18th with just 11 points so far.
Also on Wednesday, Vasco da Gama won 1-0 at Atletico Goianiense, while Fortaleza prevailed 3-1 at home to Vitoria.
