Sao Paulo have signed central defender Ruan Tressoldi on loan from Italy's Sassuolo, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Tuesday.

Tressoldi, who has two years left on his Sassuolo contract, will be tied to Sao Paulo until next June. The agreement includes an option for Sao Paulo to secure the 25-year-old on a permanent deal when the loan period ends.

"It's a good deal for us because if the loan goes well, we complete the signing," Sao Paulo football director Carlos Belmonte said, adding that Tressoldi was a direct replacement for center-back Diego Costa, who departed last month to join Russia's Krasnodar.

Tressoldi has made 64 first-team appearances for Sassuolo since joining the club from Gremio in August 2021.

Sassuolo were relegated to Italian football's second tier after finishing 19th in the 20-team Serie A last season.

Sao Paulo are currently fifth in Brazil's top-flight standings, five points behind leaders Botafogo.
