The attacking midfielder, who was in the Spain squad for both the UEFA Euro and the Olympic Games, has been forced to withdraw from the Spain under-21 squad for the forthcoming games against Scotland and Hungary.
Lopez suffered an injury to his left thigh while training on Tuesday and has returned to his club for treatment.
He joins the club's long list of injuries, which includes Ronald Araujo, Ansu Fati, Frenkie de Jong, Andreas Christensen, Gavi and Marc Bernal, who will miss the season with a torn cruciate knee ligament that he suffered while playing Rayo Vallecano last week.
On Tuesday, Barcelona president Joan Laporta gave a press conference, discussing the club's difficult summer in which it has only been able to sign Dani Olmo.
Laporta insisted the club would soon be in a position to sign normally and said that the decision to allow Ilkay Gundogan to return to Manchester City on a free transfer was purely down to "sporting reasons."
