Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana celebrates her victory in the 10,000m.

Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana destroyed the women's 10,000 metre world record to win the first athletics gold medal at Rio 2016 on Friday.

The 24-year-old, racing the distance on the track for only the second time, obliterated the field to finish in 29 minutes 17.45 seconds, breaking the previous record by over 14 seconds.

Kenya's world 10,000m champion Vivian Cheruiyot tried in vain to keep up with Ayana but had to settle for silver while Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba, the defending Olympic champion, grabbed bronze.
